H&H Bagels to Close Its UWS Shop

H&H Bagels, the 40-year-old Upper West Side of Manhattan institution, will be shutting its doors this Monday. According to a story in the Wall Street Journal, owner Helmer Toro — who opened the diminutive breakfast-staple spot in 1972 with his brother-in-law, Hector Hernandez — is closing due to economic difficulties, likely stemming from serious tax issues he had in 2009. The Midtown factory and shop on 46th Street will remain open for now, but the UWS? It won’t be the same again.
