Let’s Make Doughnuts!!
Developer:
Daniel Steel
Cost: $0.99
Runs on: iPhone

It’s been a long time since I’ve come across a stinker like this app. I mean, the app title includes not one, but two exclamation points!! And it’s about doughnuts!! How could I not be excited to review this app?

Unfortunately, as soon as I opened the app I quickly realized that I had been duped into wasting my 99 cents. Put simply, the app includes nine doughnut recipes. The end.

You want to know more? Okay, I’ll walk you through the pain. The main screen includes thumbnails of the nine recipes with their titles in a black bold font and the glaze in a smaller gray font. Click on a recipe and you’re taken to a single page that lists the title, serving size, ingredient list, preparation and a thumbnail.

You can click on the thumbnail and it will expand to fill the screen, but the images aren’t cropped proportionately so when they expand the images stretch and distort. For the “Pumpkin Doughnuts with Powdered Sug…” (yes, the headlines cut off on the navigation page and on the recipe page) recipe, the recipe image is different from the navigation image—and it’s not even a doughnut!! It looks like a loaf of pumpkin bread.

If you were thinking that maybe the recipe page would be worth the price, you’ll be disappointed there too. The background is a bland notepad design and the instructions run together with no reprieve for your eyes. Of course, an app this bad also lacks any and every option you’d expect to find in a pay app. You can’t save recipes, add your own, share recipes, modify ingredient lists, e-mail a shopping list, and so on. In fact, there’s not a single button to click outside clicking on one of the nine recipes.

You may have noticed that I didn’t include a web address up above. That’s because when I went to the page it was hacked with some not-so-friendly content on the landing page. It makes me wonder how an app like this even made it into the iTunes app store since all apps must be approved by Apple. This app is so terrible that once I’m done posting this review, I’ll be sending a note to Apple asking them to review this app for themselves. I’ll be sure to include two exclamation points in my cry for help.
