Frightening Fast-Food Breakfasts

Nothing like starting the day with a breakfast that supplies your entire sodium and saturated fat allowance (and half your daily calories) in one “breakfast sandwich.” Krishanna captures the craziness of these fast-food offerings in the blog Personal Chef to Go. “The fast food giants are drumming up increasingly cheesy, steak-y, fried chicken-y breakfast dishes that tap into flavor combinations that have proven successful for lunch and dinner items,” she writes.

Americans love their big breakfasts (me included). But this meal, the one that should give you the best nutrition after your body has fasted all night long, can be your undoing. The cheap, convenient meals below are beyond reason.

Ready? Here they aaarrrreee….

1. Carl’s Jr. Breakfast Burger

2. McDonald’s Big Breakfast with Hotcakes

3. Burger King Biscuits and Sausage Gravy Platter

4. Burger King Double Croissan’wich with Sausage Egg and Cheese

5. Hardee’s Double Sausage Egg n’ Cheese Biscuit

6. Hardee’s Loaded Breakfast Burrito

7. Hardee’s Low Carb Breakfast Bowl

8. Jack in the Box Steak and Egg Burrito

9. Jack in the Box Extreme Sausage Sandwich

10. Chick-fil-A Sausage Biscuit

Happy Halloween, everyone. Let’s try to live to see our next one!

Great post, Erika. For those who haven’t watched the documentary film, “Super Size Me,” I think it is a wake-up call to the millions of people who look to these fast-food suppliers of junk food. I am extremely grateful that my parents refused to take us out to or buy us this type of junk food. I also think these fast food junk food drive-thrus are a primary reason behind America’s growing obesity plight that has extended top down from adults to their children. The Super Size Me documentary shines a light on similar practices that the junk food chains have adopted from the cigarette suppliers: how to make a product that is highly addicting regardless of its health impact on people.

I don’t know, Erika, the Carl’s Jr. Big Country Breakfast Burrito does have sausage gravy over eggs, ham, bacon, more sausage, some sort of tater tot looking food item and two cheeses–could be a neck-and-neck tie with their breakfast burger.

Popsicle King

Better known as “King of Pops” in Atlanta’s Poncey/Highland neighborhood, this street cart looks just like any of the countless frozen confection stands across the country. But for the growing throng of regulars who have turned on to Steven Carse’s popsicles made with all-natural ingredients and intriguing flavor combinations, it’s much more than that. “I’ve […]

Restaurant History

A good salad is hard to find — even in California. Reliable Caesars and Cobbs colonize menus everywhere, as do ubiquitous piles of mixed greens dressed with vinaigrette. Beyond that, creative salads made with quality ingredients are still an exception. For too long, they were also the province of expensive, sit-down restaurants. In the last […]
